Your resume is often part of the “first impression” package that you send to hiring managers. When potential future employers “see you”, they’re really looking at your resume to perceive you as a candidate. So, what are they looking for?

Hiring managers want to see someone who is educated, experienced in the relevant fields, able to show results and make a difference and eloquent. Your resume allows you to showcase all of this information is a short and sweet package!

How can you meet all of these needs and still show off your personality, enthusiasm and professionalism? Try these tips:

Be straightforward.

You can showcase that you are the right candidate for the opportunity be being straightforward. Express your work experience in digestible bullets and an organized fashion. This way the hiring manager digests more of your resume quickly and can easily see how you are a fit for the opportunity.

Show rather than tell.

While it may feel that your resume isn’t important, it’s often the first step in capturing a hiring manger’s attention. Pack your resume with actions, results and data to support your experience. What did you do? Why was this a good thing to do? How can you tell? Keep all the information you share on your resume deliberate, and make sure it provides value to your future employer.

Stay current.

You don’t need to list every single work experience you’ve had in your life – keep the experience relevant to the opportunity you are applying for. Additionally, you should only include information from the last 10 years unless something is hyper-relevant. Showcase what’s NEW. What have you been up to lately? This is especially important in the tech world or other industries where things change, fast.

Keep it simple.

Less is often more. Using bold font, bullets and including relevant key words that convey your experience allows a hiring manger to quickly review your qualifications without getting lost in a hard to read format.
