As an IT professional, it can be hard to distinguish your work life and your home life. When so much of your entertainment revolves around screen time and you work at a computer all day, it can be tempting to work while you are at home or play while you are on the clock. It’s important to understand why these two parts of your life are important and how to best manage your time so that you are getting the most out of life at all times.

Break Down the Wall

When you work for an IT company, there is no way to fully escape your work. Your mobile device is constantly going to be updating you on every email and notification from your tech firm. The same goes for when you are at the office and only a text away from all of your friends and family.

Take away the stigma that the two have to be so polar and separate. The more you differentiate the two, the more you will think about one while you are supposed to be doing the other. Instead, find ways to integrate fun and socializing at the office while also making your career an integral part of your personality outside of work.

Just Say No

Having a healthy work-life balance sometimes means knowing when to stand your ground. If you are usually a part of the planning committee for your company but you just had a baby, it’s probably more reasonable to have someone else put in the extra hours after work so that you can put in the adequate time as a new parent.

Create Time for You

The toll that working long stressful hours can have on our bodies often gets overlooked. Soon 40 hours turns into 45 and then 50. You start getting used to completing tasks for work and running errands for the house and pretty soon, you have no time to enjoy the things that you actually like to do.

Don’t lose yourself in your career. You won’t be of any use to your employer or your loved ones if you don’t take the time to recharge and live life. If you have vacation days, take them! The break will allow you to come back to work energized and happy.

Be Present

No matter what you are doing, if you aren’t present, you are missing out on life. When you are at work, focus on all of the great things it allows you to do. Focus on how accomplished you feel because of it or the good that your company is doing for the world. When you are at home, don’t take for granted each opportunity you have to spend with your friends and family and enjoy your favorite hobbies and activities.
